The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous statutory body, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It was established on 1 April 1994 with the mission to promote food safety and quality in India by developing food safety standards and conduct research in this field.
Currently, FSSAI has over 550 registered laboratories across the country which regulate the food safety parameters such as adulteration, microbial contamination etc. To register a laboratory with FSSAI, it needs to fulfil certain eligibility criteria such as having an ISO-9001:2008 certification, having a registered office with the Indian postal service and having a minimum of five technical staff.
Apart from registering laboratories, FSSAI also conducts research in various areas such as food microbiology, toxicology and chemical analysis. It also publishes scientific journals such as Food Science and Technology (FST), Journal of Food Protection (JFP) and Indian Journal of Food Science and Technology (IJFST).

FSSAI Logo
When you obtain a license or registration, your food products can display the FSSAI logo to show customers that they are compliant with Food Safety and Standards Act. Consumers view authenticity of the mark, not just of the quality of food, but also as assurance in ensuring food is safe from any infectious disease and from adulteration by dishonest actors.
